COB LED (COB)
COB (chip-on-board) LEDs mount many bare diode dies directly onto a single substrate under one phosphor layer, creating a compact, high-intensity emitting surface that behaves optically like one bright source. That point-source character is COB’s advantage where tight beams and single-reflector optics rule — track lighting, downlights, portable work lights — and its liability at industrial power levels, where concentrating all heat into one small area demands aggressive thermal design. Mainstream industrial high bays and street lights therefore favour distributed SMD arrays, while COB persists in floodlights and work lights built around a single reflector or lens, where its optical simplicity and visual punch fit the product.
