IK Rating (IK)

The IK code (IEC 62262) rates an enclosure’s resistance to mechanical impact, from IK00 to IK10 (20 joules — a 5 kg mass dropped from 40 cm). For lighting in sports halls, parking structures, tunnels, and low-mounting industrial positions, IK08–IK10 fixtures with tempered glass or polycarbonate diffusers survive ball strikes and incidental contact that would destroy standard fittings. IK complements rather than overlaps IP: a fixture can be waterproof yet fragile, or rugged yet unsealed. Vandal-exposed municipal installations typically specify both, e.g. IP65 + IK10.
