IP Rating (Ingress Protection) (IP)
The IP code (IEC 60529) rates an enclosure’s protection with two digits: the first against solids (6 = dust-tight), the second against water (5 = jets, 6 = powerful jets, 7 = temporary immersion). IP65 is the practical baseline for outdoor and washdown-area industrial lighting — dust-tight and hose-resistant; IP66 suits high-pressure washdown in food processing and marine settings. The rating verifies ingress only: it says nothing about corrosion resistance, impact strength (IK rating), or explosion protection, which are separate certifications. Gasket quality and cable-gland workmanship determine whether a fixture actually holds its rating over years of thermal cycling.
