Ambient Temperature Rating (Ta)

The ambient temperature rating (Ta) is the range of surrounding air temperature within which a luminaire is designed to operate at full output for its rated life — commonly something like −40 °C to +50 °C for industrial fixtures. It matters at both ends: at high ambient the thermal headroom shrinks, junction and driver temperatures climb, and a fixture rated only to +35 °C will age fast under a foundry roof or a Gulf-summer canopy; at low extremes, drivers and batteries (in solar fixtures) need cold-rated components to start and charge reliably. Ta interacts with rating claims — an L70 lifetime or an Ex temperature class is only valid inside the stated ambient range — so matching the fixture’s Ta to the site’s real worst-case, not the yearly average, is a basic specification check.
