Autonomy is the number of consecutive sunless nights a solar light can run on battery alone — its buffer against cloudy spells. A system with three days’ autonomy stores roughly three nights of LED consumption beyond a normal day’s use, so a rainy week dims it late rather than killing it on night one. The right figure is climate-dependent: two to three days may suit an arid Gulf site, while monsoon regions and northern European winters justify more, or an adaptive dimming profile that stretches the remaining charge. Autonomy trades directly against cost, because it is bought in battery watt-hours, so treat both extremes as signals: a bargain fixture with “one night” autonomy will disappoint anywhere with weather, and an inflated autonomy claim on a small battery does not survive arithmetic. Check the battery Wh against the nightly load — the ratio is the truth.
