REACH Regulation (REACH)

REACH is the EU’s chemicals regulation (EC 1907/2006) — Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals — and it touches lighting hardware as articles placed on the EU market. The practical obligations for a luminaire are two: no restricted substances above their limits (Annex XVII, covering things like certain phthalates in cables), and a duty to declare any Substance of Very High Concern present above 0.1% by weight to customers, with SVHC entries also notified to the SCIP database. Where RoHS restricts a short list of hazardous substances in electrical equipment specifically, REACH sweeps far wider across the whole supply chain — cables, gaskets, coatings and packaging included. Importers carry the legal duty in the EU, so they routinely ask suppliers for REACH declarations alongside RoHS; material declarations gathered at the component level are what make those supplier statements worth the paper.
