Equipment Protection Level (EPL)

The Equipment Protection Level is the final element of a modern Ex marking — Ga, Gb or Gc for gas atmospheres, Da, Db or Dc for dust — grading how much fault tolerance the equipment’s protection provides. Ga equipment stays safe even with two independent faults and may enter Zone 0; Gb tolerates one fault and matches Zone 1; Gc is safe in normal operation and matches Zone 2. The letters give specifiers a direct zone-matching shortcut that older markings lacked: read the EPL, read the zone classification drawing, and the permitted mapping (Zone 0→Ga, Zone 1→Ga/Gb, Zone 2→any) settles equipment selection before any deeper datasheet work. In a marking like Ex db eb IIC T5 Gb, the closing Gb is the EPL — the single letter pair that says where the fixture may legally hang.
